Life begins with an inhale and ends with an exhale. In-between we all breathe and live different lives. And yet, each breath keeps us together, connected, sharing the same air. - Jeppe Hein

Breathe with Me is a ongoing, multifaceted global art project by the Danish artist Jeppe Hein, and has since 2019 invited people from all over the world to participate in various forms of the project in Denmark, the USA, Switzerland, China and many other countries.

In collaboration with ART 2030, Jeppe Hein wants to bring people together across countries, cultures and identities through Breathe with Me. The artwork invites people to paint their own breath through long, vertical, blue brushstrokes on large surfaces in various designs. The brushstrokes make the invisible breathing quite visible and creates unity and understanding of the cohesion of man and the planet.

Jeppe Hein and ART 2030 invite and encourage the whole world to breathe together through a Breathe with Me toolkit that is free and accessible to everyone worldwide. The toolkit contains a manual that provides guidance to those individuals, families, communities, schools or museums who want to explore and reflect on art and the Global Goals.

See the upcoming Breathe with Me events below, or make your own Breathe with Me artwork by downloading the toolkit for free from the project website here.

We rely on our First Breathers – people of action and inspiration. Acting as ambassadors for Breathe with Me we asked them to help spread the word and bring awareness to the project.

Every time I see the blue wall it reminds me about unity, it reminds me about solidarity, it reminds me about how connected we are. - Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations

One year after participating at the first installation of Breathe with Me in the UN Headquarters, the Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed reunites with artist Jeppe Hein for a virtual Breathe with Me experience and conversation about breathing past, present and future.

Breathe with Me at C40

On the occasion of the C40 World Mayors Summit 2019 in Copenhagen, October 11, Breathe with Me, in partnership with the Danish Architecture Center, invited Mayors, decision-makers and participants at the event Why Urban Development Prevents Us from Living Sustainably (as part of C40 public program 'Live Like Tomorrow') to participate in creating an artwork for the world.

As part of Breathe with Me in Copenhagen, schools were also invited to take part in the art project. Based on Breathe with Me’s global learning activities and workshop manual school children painted their ‘breath’ together, in connection to the nation wide annual sports day.
